In Hopes of China’s
Peaceful Transformation
A summary of the FDC activities in 2006
The focus of FDC tasks in 2006 was to strengthen international relations and motivate international democratic forces to support the Chinese and Asian democracy movement, in order to promote the democratisation of China and Asia. Members of FDC took the Chinese democratic cause as their main responsibility and made concerted efforts to push it forward. The activities can be summarized as follows:
January 25
Fei Liangyong (President of FDC), Peng Xiaoming (Chairman of the German Students and Scholars Organisation) and Grace Zou (director of the FDC European office for international relations) were invited to a party, held by the New Tang Dynasty Television (NTDTV) in EU headquarters in Brussels, for the celebration of the renewal of the contract with Eurosat, which had encountered political pressure and financial collusion of the Chinese government and had planned to discontinue the contract with NTDTV, the only TV station able to transmit free and democratic information to China. However, the united forces of the world democratic society managed to persuade Eurosat to keep the principles of freedom and democracy and renew its contract with NTDTV. During the celebration, FDC’s team met more than 100 members of EU parliament and exchanged their ideas with them. The message they got across is: The world is changing. What no one could believe years ago becomes true. The Chinese dictatorship seems strong, but is not strong enough to confront a united international democratic society.
January 27
FDC made a statement entitled „Protect civil rights and overthrow the one-party dictatorship” as a Spring Festival’s greeting to the Chinese people on the Mainland. FDC called on all Chinese to discard communism and stop being slaves, to establish a new world view with freedom and democracy as its essence, to be brave enough to protect their own rights and those of the others. FDC wished at the same time that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) could catch up with world trends and stop its blind belief violence. FDC warned CCP not to keep suppressing the democratic pursuit of the Chinese people with violence.
February
At the beginning of the new year, FDC published the first issue of “New China”, a magazine with a fine variety of content and an excellent quality of design and print. Pan Yongzhong and Peng Xiaoming put enormous efforts into it. Unfortunately the further publication has to be suspended due to lack of financial support.
February 9
FDC members in Australia, led by the chairman of their branch Mr. Chin Jin, visited some members of the Australian parliament in Canberra, informing them of the serious human rights abuses happening in the last few months in China, such as the bloody suppression of the peasants in Village Taishi and Shanwei in Canton. They mentioned especially the case of the Chinese civil rights lawyer Mr. Gao Zhisheng, who was tracked and observed by the Chinese police in the last several months. He started his protest with a hunger strike. FDC’s Australian team hopes that the Australian politicians can use their influence to urge the Chinese government to stop its repression of its own people. After the visit, FDC’s team met Dr. Frost and his assistant, researchers for Australia’s China policy in the parliament.
