On behalf of the “German-Chinese Association–Friends of Taiwan” – I would like to express our solidarity with you. Unfortunately, due to commitments in Berlin we could not send anybody from our Board Members to Brussel, but we would like to reassure today our deep sympathy.
Our association has been founded in 1957. For fifty years by now, politicians, scientists, artists – people from different background - are supporting and promoting realtionship with civil society in Taiwan.
As a matter of fact, the leader of the early democratic forces in China, Sun Yat-sen, established in 1911 a parlamentarian democracy on the basis of “rule of law” and guaranteed “human rights”. However, this attempt failed rather soon. Mao`s fight against the authoritarian General Chiang Kai-shek stopped the hope for democracy for quite a long time.
More than thirty years later a new breakthrough of democratic movement started on Taiwan.
Today, Taiwan is a solid democracy and can serve as a model throughout Asia.
We sincerely support your conference and hope that the meeting in Brussel will provide a fertile environment to enhance democratic achievements within the Chinese context.
Wolfgang Lüder
Chairman of german-Chinese Association-Friends of Taiwan
